Garden Bench – Best Buy Prices, Quality and Setting

Gardens are considered tamed pieces of nature. If you are blessed with a luxury of having one in your home you should definitely keep reading this article.

Why exactly should you own a garden bench? Some time ago I asked myself the same question. And the answer is really plain. Imagine those summer afternoons spent with your loved ones surrounded with lush scents of nearby greenery and flowers. Does this sound like an appealing notion? If you enjoy spending time in your garden at the end of the long day at work or after you rest your kids to sleep, you should definitely consider buying a garden bench.

There are certain criteria every bench should pass before it takes places in your yard. My plan is to present you here with basics about garden benches, including materials for making, styles, settings and ambiance they would go along.

There are number of choices, hand crafted or from serial production. You can even find unique pieces but those would be less cheap than others. You can always consider building a garden bench by yourself if you have the will and tools at your disposal. This can turn into a beautiful hobby if you are prone to such activities. But let’s keep our focus here at the moment.

Preferred Material for a Garden Bench

This decision depends solely on your personal taste. You can choose from a whole palette of materials, like wood, iron, concrete, marble, granite, resin or even plastic. Although, if you want a construction that is durable and long lasting keep in mind that materials like concrete, stone and granite will be better than, for example, a wooden garden bench.

Wooden Garden Bench

If you want to consider a wooden bench my suggestion would be to buy a nice teak bench or even mahogany, or cedar. Actually, there is no limit to what wood can be used in making. There are many options, and you won’t make a mistake choosing either of them.

I would like to make an important note about maintenance. Hard surface materials will be much easier to maintain than ones with softer surface, except for wrought iron which is prone to rusting. For example, marble is more resistant to bad weather than wood and it’s much easier to clean. Nevertheless, every garden bench will require cleaning on occasion. You can use a mixture of plain hand soap and bleach to remove the stains caused by time decay. Mildew can present itself as a constant problem, especially with wooden benches. This is why teak wood is excellent because it naturally produces oils that are resistant to rotting and will prevent any mildew growth and cracks.

Plastic benches are very practical and painless to maintain. Just use water and a clean towel. They are smart and the least expensive solution if you regularly receive large parties of people. But unavoidably, they take away from a certain stylish look. Either way, it’s your call.

Design and Dimensions

In general, the more stylish the look the more money you will need to spend. There are some exquisite works of carpentry that would make your yard flourish from freshness. Also wrought iron is known by its design and fancy wielded finishings with various shapes, curved and straight. Depending on personal preference backless model can be considered as well.

The size depends on how many people will sit on it, but usually they are built for 2 to 4 people. Height is usually of less importance. Width of 6 feet is enough to give space to three people to sit comfortably without fighting for room. If you need something wider than that, you could think about getting a picnic bench, which can be an excellent solution for bigger crowds.

Finding a Place and a Purpose for Your New Garden Bench

First of all, the size of your yard will dictate the exact placement and the number of garden benches. Personally I have a smaller one built for two resting in a secluded place, which can’t be seen immediately when you enter the garden. This is something you would want to consider, because peace and solitude can be essential sometimes. Then again, if you have kids or you often like to throw parties for your friends, placing is irrelevant and you would want to buy a sturdy and a robust specimen. In that case my selection would definitely be a mixture of iron and wood, which constantly proves itself like reliable and lasting solution. Either way, the best placement is where it would compliment your garden design and feel.

Bench Cushions as a Final Touch

These can be a lovely addition. Their purpose is twofold; to provide more comfortable sitting and to set an interesting stylish look. Splash of color can really brighten up your yard. Actually their purpose is threefold; the third being to eat more money from your pocket, like garden bench on itself isn’t enough :D just kidding.
